TRIBUTE TO OUR CHAIRPERSON
KEITH " OXY " RODDY
This is a tribute to Keith 'Oxy' Roddy from the Top of the Hill Celtic Football Club and The Whistle Project.
Oxy was 100% dedicated and committed to both of these ventures in his life. From the age of 16 years, Oxy was involved with the Top of the Hill Celtic Football Club. He went from player to Coach, Coach to Manager and eventually Chairperson.. However, he never lost touch with his managerial role and nurtured his current Under 14 Team through the years. Under his supervision, the Team grew both in skills and confidence and went on to win the Prestigious Northern Ireland Boys Football Association Mallusk Cup. The remainder of the Club grew in numbers round him and his team and Coaches also grew. He organised all the Team Trips, Coaches, Training, Functions etc. and always rose above and beyond his call of duty and role as Chairperson.
Oxy was very much involved in the Top of the Hill Community. He attended and assisted in the organising of all functions, events, festivals and youth activities with great enghusiasim, dedication and commitment. It was through his involvement with the Youth in the Top of the Hill area, that he saw a great need from an all purpose sports facility. With the help and assistance from people in the area and funding bodies, Oxy turned a disused car-park which was the shape of a whistle, into a state of the art outdoor Astro Turf Pitch, which became known as The Whistle Project. This pitch was officially opened by the Celtic legend Billy McNeil last year. He then went on to secure funding to build first class changing rooms adjacent to the pitch, which just opened this year with and Under 9's Cross Community Schools Tournament. Oxy always said that this was a 3 phase project. Sadly for Oxy, he will not get to see the inception of phase 3, but the plans are there so it can be followed through in his name.
Oxy has nurtured and developed sport, especially soccer in the Top of the Hill area through his teams (Under 9's to Under 17's and the Adult Team) and The Whistle Project. His life was so tragically cut short on Christmas Eve. He will be sadly missed by all the children from his teams, parents and his coaches - Eamon, Dunny, Chris, Paddy, Higgs, Tony, Dicey, Poundies, Niall, Jolene and all those who knew him within the football circle. He will also be sorely missed by his work colleagues - Theresa, Pat, Ciara and the Committee at the Whistle Project.
MAY HE REST IN PEACE - KEITH "OXY" RODDY -1970 - 2005
